Book an entry slot to explore the ancient underground caves (takes approximately 50 minutes)
What to wear: Stump Cross is a natural cavern system. It is 7°C in the cave throughout the year and it is damp, so dress warmly or you’ll get cold. Wear sensible flat footwear – trainers, wellies or walking boots or you will get wet feet. Please do not wear heels – it is uneven and you risk damaging yourself. We provide hard hats as there are sections which have low ceilings. The wearing of hard hats is MANDATORY for children AND adults. Limestone is hard and in a fight between your scalp and the stone – the stone will win. No back carriers for infants allowed due to height, potential injury and damage – only front carriers. No large rucksacks to be worn at all.
Access: The cavern is naturally narrow and/or low in areas. It is uneven underfoot and there are sections with low ceilings and slender passageways. There are 65 steps down and 65 steps up. There are no lifts. There is no wheelchair access and the terrain below ground can be challenging and exertive – especially on the steps – and shouldn’t be undertaken by anyone who doesn’t consider themselves fit and active.
Covid-19: We ask you also to be patient with others in the caves. Cave entry is staggered but please remember that some visitors are faster than others.
We have a staggered cave entry system so that social distancing can be maintained. A tour around the caves takes around 50 minutes.
