Wondering whether to adventure down the caves this bank holiday? Well maybe we can persuade you…
The photo below contains three small sections of our cave taken out of The Rimstone Pools, located just before you turn into one of our three main caverns, Wolverine.
The Rimstone pools are located on the showcave level of our system, some 50 feet down below the surface. This is the oldest section of the Stump Cross System which was formed over 300,000 years ago.
The patterns carved into the large piece of rock at the back were created by the various stream ways that once moved through the system. Slowly eroding the cave floor to allow the space for the formations that you can see today to grow.
The water has since moved down to the lower levels of the system leaving behind these amazing pieces of history in its absence.
The only question on all the cavers minds now is, where has all that water gone?
Legend has it that there is a hidden lake underneath the cave system hundreds of feet below the surface just waiting to be discovered…
Are you ready to venture down to the depths of Stump Cross Caverns and explore the natural wonders that lie beneath.
Maybe you’ll be inspired to help find what was lost so many years ago… ⛏
We’re open everyday day from 9am until 6pm with last admissions to the cave being at 5:30pm.
