Discover the awe-inspiring beauty of natural geodes

Uncracked geodes are like gift-wrapped treasures from Mother Nature. On the outside, they look like plain old rocks. But crack them open and you'll see countless crystals that gleam and glitter in the light.

These natural wonders take shape over tens of thousands of years. What happens is that water gets trapped inside hollow volcanic rocks. Over time, minerals in the water are deposited on the insides of the rock. These minerals – very, very slowly – turn into beautiful, sparkling crystals.

That's why it's such a treat to have unopened geodes for sale at the Geode Shack. Those crystals formed thousands of years ago and have never been seen before by any human being. Break your own geode and you'll have a front-row seat at their world premiere!

Book experience

At Stump Cross Caverns, we love all things sparkly, ancient and mysterious.

That's why the fun doesn't stop at geode cracking. If you love gems like we do, why not try panning for treasure at our real, working mining sluice?

Simply grab a bag of "pay dirt" from the Geode Shack, then head over to the sluice to see what sparkly secrets you'll find. As the water washes away the dirt, you might see gorgeous green quartz, chalky calcite or colourful jasper. In any case, the gemstones are yours to take home and keep.

Your questions answered

  • What is a geode rock?

A geode rock (also known as just a "geode") is a special kind of rock with a hollow space inside. Over tens of thousands of years, this cavity fills with beautiful, sparkling crystals.

That means when we break open geodes at the Geode Shack, it's the first time those crystals have been seen by any human being. Isn't that incredible?

  • What does a geode rock look like?

From the outside, a geode looks like any other plain, boring old rock. Inside, however, it's a whole different story. Crack a geode open and you'll see a burst of glittering crystals coating the hollow interior. It's like discovering a whole new world hidden within one small rock.

And here's the best bit. Because geodes form naturally over many thousands of years, each specimen is one-of-a-kind. Crack your own geode at the Geode Shack and you'll have a unique slice of Earth's history that's yours to keep.

  • Where are geode rocks found?

Geode rocks are found all around the world. You're most likely to see them in places where there was once lots of volcanic activity – or around ancient hot springs. That includes locations like Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico and the western United States. They're also commonly found in Somerset, England.

At Stump Cross Caverns, we source white quartz geodes from a specialist supplier in Morocco.

  • How do you open a geode?

Geode cracking is a bit of an art form. Get it wrong and you won't get a nice, clean break. Get it badly wrong and you could end up smashing it to bits. Yikes!

That's why we break open geodes using a special tool called a pipe cracker. This makes sure we get a nice, clean cut every time – and you get a perfect, sparkly specimen to take home.

  • Where can you buy geodes?

You'll find lots of pre-cracked geode rocks for sale online and at gift shops. That includes our very own crystal shop in the Yorkshire Dales.

However, it's much harder to find unopened geodes for sale. That's what's so special about Geode James's Geode Shack. Not only can you find uncracked geodes to buy, but you can see them cracked open before your very eyes. Wow!
