If you're thinking of visiting Stump Cross Caverns, why not get yourself in the mood by watching some cave movies? Here's our stand-out cave movie list.

Before you embark on your visit to our captivating caves, why not immerse yourself in the world of cave movies?

Whether is fact or fiction, scary or sentimental, comedy or classic, there's a movie for everyone. So, grab your headlamp, hold onto your popcorn and join the underground party. Here, rocks are the stars and darkness is the canvas for cinema's most mysterious and hilarious adventures.

A quick note: some of these films are scary, creepy or generally not-very-child-friendly. Make sure you check the rating and watch the film yourself before throwing it on for family movie night. And don't be put off by any spooky goings-on – our caves are very safe and rather magical, if we do say so ourselves!

1. The Cave (2005)

Any list of cave movies would be incomplete without this imaginatively titled adventure flick.

The Cave
is a gripping action-adventure thriller set in an unexplored cave network. As a team of intrepid cave divers ventures deep into the uncharted depths, they uncover eerie mysteries and encounter unforeseen perils. Facing tight passages, rising waters and chilling discoveries, the group races against time to rescue trapped explorers.

This high-stakes adrenaline-fuelled journey into the unknown blends elements of suspense, survival and mystery. With stunning visuals and heart-stopping action, we see the human spirit's resilience amid extreme circumstances.

Watch this film to explore the limits of bravery and the haunting allure of the hidden underworld.

2. Thunderball (1965)

The fourth movie in the James Bond franchise to star Sean Connery,
Thunderball is a big, fun adventure.

James Bond dives into action to thwart SPECTRE's nuclear scheme. Facing dangers in the Bahamas, he effortlessly charms everyone – from villains to vixens. Bond, as usual, ensures the world's safety with a smirk and his trademark shaken-not-stirred finesse.

But the real star of the show is Thunderball Grotto. This underwater cave system is teeming with dazzling marine life that will enchant every visitor. A hidden gem in the Bahamas, it allows you to swim, snorkel and scuba dive.

But if you can't afford the flights, sit back with your Bahama Mama cocktail and check it out in
Thunderball.

3. The Croods (2013)

A family favourite,
The Croods is a prehistoric joyride where a bunch of Stone Age misfits try not to get stomped, squashed or snacked on.

They're the world's first modern family, led by the overprotective dad, Grug, whose motto is basically "Fear everything!"

Then there's Eep, the daughter with an adventurous streak that could rival a tornado. And Guy, a clever young lad with ideas as wild as his fashion sense.

When their cave collapses, the Croods embark on a hilarious journey through uncharted territory. The Croods prove that when you laugh, life gets that little bit easier – and survival is always more fun when you club together.

4. Sanctum (2011)

Sanctum
plunges you into an underwater thrill ride, where a cave-diving expedition turns into a fight for survival.

The film features a team of explorers led by an obsessive cave diver, Frank, whose ego is bigger than the caves themselves. When a storm floods their cave system, it becomes a watery maze of claustrophobia and danger. Tensions rise, oxygen dwindles and teamwork is as scarce as dry land.

The gripping tale takes you through terrifying passages and tests the limits of human endurance, making you hold your breath – not just for the characters, but for yourself, in this intense struggle for survival.

5. Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)

This action-comedy is an adventurous rollercoaster that will entertain the whole family.

We have a clueless science professor, Trevor and his nephew, Sean, who has more energy than a caffeinated toddler. Together, they stumble into a volcano and end up spelunking their way down, encountering all things weird, wild and wonderful.

With a guide who's part adventurer and part conspiracy theorist, they navigate through quirky caves, wild creatures, and gravitational oddities. This film makes spelunking seem like extreme sightseeing.

6. Thai Cave Rescue (2022), Thirteen Lives (2022) and The Rescue (2021)

In the summer of 2018, the whole world was gripped by the story of a Thai junior football team that became stuck in a cave system in Northern Thailand. After a practice session on June 23, the team and assistant coach entered the caves only to emerge 18 days later after an international rescue effort.

Well, not only was the world captivated, but so – it seems – was Hollywood. We have three films to choose from that all chronicle their miraculous rescue. These films depict the brave mission to save the 12 boys and their coach from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system. Watch any of them and you'll appreciate the courage, unity and global effort that saved lives against incredible odds.

7. The Goonies (1985)

This cult classic will take you on a nostalgic journey of hilarity.

A group of misfit kids go on a thrilling adventure to find a pirate's long-lost treasure in order to save their homes from foreclosure. Led by the brave Mikey and his friends, the Goonies encounter booby traps, an eccentric crime family and a lovable but dim-witted giant named Sloth.

As they navigate treacherous caves and face wild escapades, their camaraderie and wit shine, creating hilarious moments interspersed with danger. The Goonies embark on an unforgettable quest that celebrates friendship, bravery and the joy of being true to yourself.

Now you've got yourselves into the mood, why not come have your very own spelunk-tastic (and much safer) adventure at Stump Cross Caverns? You can expect a fun-filled family day out in Yorkshire – with no zombies or international criminal organisations, guaranteed!
