Explore the top Yorkshire breweries, as we highlight the craftsmanship, passion and unique flavours that make them stand out in the craft beer world.

A glass of beer is sitting on top of a wooden barrel.

When it comes to craft beer, few regions in the UK can rival the charm and quality of Yorkshire – perhaps because the county boasts a rich brewing tradition that dates back centuries.

Today, a new wave of independent breweries is redefining the region's beer scene, producing innovative and delicious brews that capture the essence of Yorkshire's diverse landscapes and communities.

In this article, we take you on a journey through the best of Yorkshire's "indie" brewers.  Join us as we showcase the craftsmanship, passion and unique flavours that help them hop the competition.

Magic Rock Brewing Company

Located in Huddersfield, Magic Rock Brewing Company is a name that resonates with beer aficionados across the country. Since its founding in 2011, Magic Rock has quickly become one of Yorkshire's most celebrated microbreweries. Its commitment to pushing the boundaries of flavour and experimentation is evident in every pint it pours.

Magic Rock's Huddersfield taproom is a must-visit destination for beer lovers. Here, you can savour a wide range of the brewery's offerings, from its flagship Cannonball IPA to seasonal and limited-edition brews.

The brewery's dedication to quality and innovation has earned it numerous awards, making it a shining star in Yorkshire's craft beer constellation.

The Black Sheep Brewery

The Black Sheep Brewery was launched in the early 1990s by Paul Theakston – the Theakston name being very famous in the region's brewing industry.

Paul broke away when his family business was bought out – against his wishes – by a national brewer. This move made Paul the "black sheep" of the Theakston family, hence the name.

Using a mixture of traditional methods and modern innovations, the Black Sheep team has honed its unique brand over 30 years. The brewery chooses to focus on quality, consistency and the best possible ingredients. That's "the Black Sheep way".

Cold Bath Brewing Co.

Established in 2017 in Harrogate, Cold Bath creates beers that embody the fresh, clean spa water that flows through the town. Book in at The Clubhouse for cocktails, street food or one of the brewery's regular live music events to compliment its zingy ales.

Or, for a truly unique experience, you can visit The Taproom, where the beer is brewed upstairs and piped straight down into the taps. Here, you can also exclusively sample barrel-aged and small-batch beers on limited release. Offerings change every week.

Richmond Brewing Company

Based in Richmond's former railway station, Richmond Brewing Company is an exciting visitor attraction for tours and tasting sessions. The six-barrel microbrewery is set on the banks of the River Swale and offers two very important things: good pints and reasonable prices!

Among the range of beers, ciders and spirits on offer is a very special amber-coloured beer called Stump Cross Ale. With aromas of citrus and toffee, this unique drink is made by adding cave water from Stump Cross Caverns. The limestone filtration through the cave system adds an extra dimension of flavour to the beer.

Sample the unique taste at the brewery's taproom or one of its two pubs (The Castle Tavern or The Hildyard Arms). You can also pick up a bottle or two at the
Stump Cross Caverns gift shop.

Brass Castle Brewery

Malton, a charming market town in North Yorkshire, is where you'll find Brass Castle Brewery. Founded in 2011, this brewery is known for its innovative approach to brewing, with a strong emphasis on vegan and gluten-free options.

Brass Castle's commitment to sustainability, both in its brewing process and packaging, is a testament to its forward-thinking ethos. And, of course, it brews great beer. Its Bad Kitty porter and Hoptical Illusion pale ale have gained dedicated followings for their exceptional flavours.

The brewery's taproom is open six days a week and is self-proclaimed as "probably the best pub in all of Malton"!

Ilkley Brewery

Founded in 2009, Ilkley Brewery is known for its diverse lineup of beers, each with a story to tell. From the Mary Jane pale ale to the Ilkley Black stout, its offerings cater to a wide range of tastes. The brewery's focus on quality and creativity has earned it a strong reputation not only in Yorkshire but also across the UK.

While Ilkley Brewery doesn't have a taproom of its own, it runs regular events throughout the year. Its website also has a handy Ilkley Brewery "Beerfinder" map, which details all pubs and vendors in the local area where you can enjoy Ilkley Brewery produce.

Saltaire Brewery

Nestled in the historic town of Saltaire, this brewery combines tradition with a strong sense of place. Saltaire Brewery, founded in 2005, is known for its dedication to classic British ale styles. It crafts its beers with care, using locally sourced ingredients and traditional methods.

A visit to Saltaire Brewery's taproom lets you sample a range of its finely balanced ales, including the renowned Saltaire Blonde and the rich, malty Triple Chocoholic. The brewery's commitment to sustainability and community engagement makes it a real gem in the Yorkshire brewing landscape.

Kirkstall Brewery

Leeds, of course, has a long and well-documented history in brewing, with Tetley's being a big name in the city from the late 19th century to the present day.

Now the city has another brewing gem to its name: Kirkstall Brewery.

Kirkstall draws inspiration from the city's industrial heritage and combines it with a passion for crafting exceptional beers. Its Three Swords pale ale and Dissolution IPA are standout favourites, showcasing the brewery's commitment to balance and drinkability.

Kirkstall has a cosy, welcoming taproom where you can enjoy its creations and learn more about its brewing philosophy.
