So, you've decided to visit North Yorkshire. But where will you stay? Check out these quirky options that can all be found close to Stump Cross Caverns.

So, you've decided to visit North Yorkshire. Perhaps you're even planning to pop into Stump Cross Caverns – our ancient network of underground caves, hidden deep beneath the Yorkshire Dales.

Great! But have you thought about where you might stay?

Stump Cross is a special and magical place, where you'll travel back to a long-forgotten prehistoric age. Wouldn't it be great if your accommodation was equally unique?

You can't stay in the caves, unfortunately. (Though someone once did. In 1963, Geoff Workman broke a world record by
spending 105 days in the caves, alone .)

Not to worry. North Yorkshire has plenty of quirky places where you can get some shuteye. Here are 9 options that are all close to Stump Cross Caverns.

1. The Sidings

Station Lane, near York

You don't need to be a rail enthusiast to enjoy a night at The Sidings – but it certainly helps!

This hostelry promises a truly unique overnight experience. You'll take a journey into the past with its bespoke hotel rooms, each of which has been converted from a genuine Pullman train carriage.

Even its dining space is unique. Also set in a Pullman carriage, the restaurant allows you to enjoy your meal as if you were dining first class on an old steam train.

2. The Ruin

Hackfall Woods, Grewelthorpe

Situated in an area of outstanding beauty, Hackfall Woods is an ancient woodland with hidden grottos, waterfalls, rustic temples and glades.

If Hackfall Woods is a hidden gem, then The Ruin is a secret within a secret. Thoughtfully restored in the early 2000s, this little pavilion is a dream location for all those who are fortunate enough to stay here.

Opening the doors of its beautiful sitting room reveals the ever-changing landscape of Hackfall. The Yorkshire Dales countryside will roll out for miles before you. Truly awe-inspiring stuff.

3. King Auberon and Queen Mabs bothies

Stamford Bridge, near York

Step into another world and enjoy these woodland Bothies that are fit for medieval royalty. Set within 200 acres of mature woodland, each bothy is hand-painted with unique fantasy artwork.

This eco-retreat offers an opportunity to escape from technology and gives you a back-to-nature experience without the need to sacrifice creature comforts.

There's even a private wood-fired hot tub wood outside. Does it get any better than that?

5. Shepherd's Delight

North Stainley

Get away from the hustle and bustle of life in this shepherd's hut, which is situated within its own woodland in a five-acre field.

The hut is off-grid and insulated with sheep's wool. For heating or cooking, there's a fabulous wood-burning stove. At night, you can snuggle down in an alpaca duvet (courtesy of the venue's own alpacas) and enjoy the double bed with luxurious cotton bedding.

It's a real treat for wildlife lovers too. If you're lucky, you might spot furry (or feathered) friends like deer, rabbits, lapwings and pheasants.

Back O' Th' Hill Farm, near Skipton

The Calf Pens are just what they sound like – a series of cosy little barns converted from genuine former calf pens. These spaces make you feel like you're far away in a Scandinavian country rather than nestled in the Yorkshire Dales. They're the epitome of hygge .

The barns feature charming facilities like log burners and four-poster beds, as well as stunning views over the local farmland. There's also an on-site cafe that serves suitably rustic grub such as beans on toast, scrambled eggs and bacon sarnies.
