Christmas is a wonderful time to make family memories – and Yorkshire has plenty of festive adventures to look forward to in 2026.

From exploring an underground cave to following illuminated woodland trails and stepping into an enchanting Christmas mansion, there's something for children of all ages.

Planning a special day out with the children? Looking for a new family tradition? Or perhaps you’re simply hoping to soak up some seasonal sparkle. In any case, here are five Christmas events in Yorkshire to add to your diary.

1. Christmas at Stump Cross Caverns

Saturday 28 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026

At Stump Cross Caverns, we're swapping traditional festivities for a magical yuletide adventure beneath the ground.

All year round, Stump Cross has a festive atmosphere. Perhaps it's the sparkling stalagmites and stalactites or our very own Reindeer Cavern. At Christmas, things only get more Christmassy.

Children get to meet Santa and his head elf during an interactive festive show. There'll be songs, a beautiful crystal gift and the chance to make reindeer food to take home.

The magic continues underground, where families can explore the ancient show caves, admire their fascinating natural formations and solve Christmas riddles along the way.

Families wanting to make a full day of their visit can choose a package that also includes a classic Christmas film in our cosy cinema. There are different ticket options available, so you can pick the experience that suits your family and budget.

2. The Christmas Experience at Lotherton

Lotherton transforms into a festive wonderland for its much-loved Christmas Experience. The historic hall, gardens and woodland provide a beautiful setting for a family day out, with twinkling lights and imaginative attractions dotted around the estate.

One of the biggest highlights for 2026 is the reimagined Twelve Days of Christmas walk through Captain's Wood. Inspired by nostalgic toys and larger-than-life festive characters, the trail promises colourful installations and playful surprises for little visitors.

There's plenty more to enjoy, including the Elf Village, festive craft activities and opportunities to toast marshmallows by the firepit.

Families booking a Santa experience can also look forward to festive activities with Mrs Claus before meeting Father Christmas. The historic hall adds another layer to the visit, with its traditional Edwardian Christmas decorations.

3. Magic at the Mansion at Harewood House

Friday 6 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027

Harewood House brings a theatrical touch to Christmas with Magic at the Mansion. This immersive festive experience turns its historic interiors into a world of storytelling and imagination.

Families can explore rooms filled with imaginative installations, discover unexpected characters and enjoy the spectacle of the house in its Christmas finery. Outside, the gardens and grounds offer space to wrap up warm, enjoy the winter scenery and take a break from the indoor attractions.

There are additional festive experiences to explore, including Harewood's Elf Village Father Christmas Experience, running on selected dates from Saturday 5 to Thursday 24 December. Seasonal food and festive treats make it easy to turn your visit into a leisurely day out.

This is a great choice for families who enjoy grand historic buildings, creative displays and a little festive theatre. Remember that Santa experiences may require separate arrangements, so check exactly what your chosen ticket includes before booking.

4. Magical Christmas Experience at Mother Shipton's Cave

Selected dates from Saturday 28 November to Thursday 24 December 2026

For a festive outing full of woodland magic, Mother Shipton's Cave is an excellent choice. Its ancient woodland is transformed into a sparkling Christmas Village, with twinkling lights guiding families through a seasonal setting.

Children can meet Santa's elves, explore festive activities and enjoy a special family visit with Father Christmas.

Every child with a Santa Experience Ticket receives a festive activity pack and a gift, making the visit feel extra special. Seasonal refreshments – including hot chocolate, mince pies and toasted marshmallows – provide a welcome treat along the way.

The attraction's natural setting adds something different to the experience, with its famous cave and Petrifying Well contributing to the folklore of the site.

This is an excellent option for families who love fairytale settings, outdoor adventures and traditional Christmas magic. Sessions are timed and must be booked in advance. Remember that you need both a group admission ticket and a Santa Experience Ticket for participating children.

5. The Polar Express Train Ride at Wensleydale Railway

November and December 2026

All aboard for a Christmas adventure inspired by the beloved festive film! The Polar Express Train Ride at Wensleydale Railway offers families the chance to experience the magic of the story on a heritage train.

From the moment passengers arrive, the experience is designed to bring the film to life. Expect festive music, costumed characters, storytelling and a special visit from Santa.

Children can enjoy the excitement of receiving their own silver sleigh bell, echoing the memorable moment from the film.

Many families embrace the occasion by wearing matching Christmas pyjamas, adding to the sense of anticipation as they wait to board. It's an especially appealing choice for children who adore trains and Christmas stories.

The combination of a real heritage railway, festive entertainment and Santa makes this a brilliant Christmas treat.

Popular dates and departure times can sell out, so book early and check the official calendar before making travel plans.
