Want to buy a present for a dad who's mad about fossils? Explore 6 Father's Day options in our gift guide.

Do you have a dad who's a fan of fossils? Barmy about bones? A father who thinks that rocks simply rock? A man of ammonites? Then you might be looking for a fossil gift for him this Father's Day.

Of course, the obvious choice would be to buy him, erm, a fossil – or at least a fossil replica. And boy,
do we have some prehistoric peaches here at Stump Cross Caverns.

However, there's more than one way to get into a paternal palaeontologist's good books. You could buy him a book or magazine on the subject, give him digging equipment or even take him on a trip.

Let's explore some fossil-focused gift ideas for Father's Day 2025. Whatever you choose, we hope you have a day to remember with your dad.

1. Let him dig into his passion with a fossil excavation kit

Is your dad a fan of tinkering and pottering? A good option might be to get him a fossil excavation kit.

This is a DIY kit that lets you turn your backyard into an archaeological dig. It gives you the tools you need to extract fossils from a block of sediment. And unlike a real archaeological site, it's easy to clean up (and doesn't leave a gaping hole in the garden…)

2. Help him swot up with a fossil field guide

Is Dad already a dab hand at fossil digging? You could feed his fossil mania with a handy field guide.

There are many on the market. A good one will include descriptions of different specimens, geological information and tips on where to find them in the UK and beyond.

You can also find field guides with pencil or colour illustrations. Some are as beautiful as the fossils themselves!

Give a man a fish, they say, and you feed him for the day. But teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. A fossil field guide could unlock fossil-based fun for years to come.

3. Treat him to a fossil-hunting adventure

Why not take Dad on a day trip (or longer) to dig some fossils? The UK is rich in the things – from Dorset to the Isle of Wight, from Yorkshire to Kent.

Wherever you choose to go, you can expect a day or two of fresh air, fun and (hopefully) a free souvenir.

4. Take a trip to a palaeontology museum

The UK isn't just a hotbed of fossil sites. It's also a hotbed of palaeontology museums. Maybe this Father's Day, you could take Dad to visit one?

We don't have space to list them all – but some of the UK's finest include:

The New Walk Museum in Leicester

Dinosaur Isle on the Isle of Wight

The Lyme Regis Museum

The Oxford University Museum of Natural History

The Natural History Museum in London (of course)

Whichever you choose, you're sure to see dinosaur skeletons, fossil displays and more information than you can shake a bone at.

5. Subscribe to a fossil magazine

Is your dad a magazine reader? There are a number of fossil and palaeontology magazines available. Some are for specialists and some for enthusiasts, so it's worth doing your research before making a purchase.

If you're unsure what kind of magazine to go for, you could try
Deposits . In its own words, this is a "colour glossy 52-page high-quality earth science magazine […] aimed at both beginners, enthusiasts and professionals". It's available in both print and online versions.

H3: 6. Buy him a fossil or fossil replica

Here at Stump Cross Caverns, we're fossil fanatics – and with good reason.

Our limestone caves are hundreds of thousands of years old – and prehistoric remains of bison, reindeer and more have been found in them. You can see some replicas of these finds in our visitor centre.

Our prehistoric passion is reflected in our events calendar, too. We hold
interactive fossil digs for the little ones, encouraging them to learn about the Earth's past through play.

We also stock a wide range of fossils and fossil replicas, both in our
online shop and on-site. Want to buy Dad a fine specimen this Father's Day? Here's a by-no-means-exhaustive list.

Who invented Father's Day?

Mother's Day has been around for centuries – but Father's Day is a little more recent. Where did it come from?

There are several origin stories for Father's Day. The most plausible, however, relates to a woman named Sonora Louise Smart in Washington, USA.

Sonora and her siblings were brought up by her father after her mother died in childbirth. She wanted an opportunity to celebrate him. Soon, local clergymen were on board, and the first, albeit unofficial, Father's Day was held in 1910.

In 1966, US President Lyndon B Johnson declared the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. This was signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1972.

So there you have it – some fossil gift ideas for Dad this Father's Day. We hope it helps you choose the right present for him.
