A hike, a cave and an extraordinary afternoon tea
No British hiker can ignore the Yorkshire Dales for long. Sure, our island is brimful of beautiful scenery – from the lakes and fells of Cumbria to the golden Cornish sands. But here at Stump Cross Caverns, we think the Dales are the most beautiful of all.
The area has been well-trodden and well-documented, with books and websites of Yorkshire hikes spreading like moss on a limestone crag. Yet new routes are being recorded all the time – and here at Stump Cross Caverns, we've added our
own route to the canon.
It's a five-mile circular walk beginning and ending here at Stump Cross Caverns. Along the way, you get to soak up some truly stunning scenery: streams, caves and perhaps best of all, the limestone gorge at Trollers Gill.
Trollers Gill is rich with history and folklore. Legends abound of its supernatural inhabitants – from rock-chucking trolls to a demonic hound.
Well, all that's as may be – but there's no denying that Trollers Gill is well worth a visit.
Don't believe us? Just ask
The Yorkshireman, a content creator who celebrates all things Yorkshire in his online magazine. He's got a keen eye for local colour and a passion for the area that made one user comment: "All your videos make me want to visit".
He tried our walking route and documented it in a
TikTok video. As well as singing its praises – and capturing the dramatic, crag-ridden, sun-soaked landscape – he also ended his walk with afternoon tea back at Stump Cross Caverns.
It was, he says, a "stunning" way to end the walk. But it wasn't just the sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes and scones that tickled his fancy – it was also our dog-friendly cafe and, of course, those unmissable views across the Dales.
Would you like to follow in the Yorkshireman's footsteps, taking in some gorgeous scenery before treating yourself to afternoon tea? Here's how to do it.
The walk
The walk begins and ends right here at Stump Cross Caverns, a network of limestone caves and passageways beloved by cavers and tourists alike.
It takes you through the rolling moors, cliffs and paths of the Yorkshire Dales to Trollers Gill. This naturally occurring limestone gorge is a peaceful, atmospheric spot – and a hotbed of local legends.
The route is moderately difficult, making it suitable for both casual and experienced hikers. All you need is a pair of hiking boots, a bottle of water and a thirst for adventure!
The route is available on the
AllTrails website and app. This is a database of more than 25,000 walking, biking and climbing routes from across the world.
You can access the AllTrails route on your web browser and print it off or make your own version. Alternatively, you can follow the route on the smartphone app. If you upgrade to the AllTrails+ subscription, you can download the route to your phone for offline use.
Where to park
You can park here at Stump Cross Caverns. Parking is free of charge: you just need to tell us your vehicle registration when you arrive. There are also on-site toilets and refreshments at the cafe, so you can fuel up before you set out.
The legends of Trollers Gill
A number of local legends surround this narrow limestone gorge.
The Yorkshire Dales, of course, are teeming with
tales of ghosts and figures from folklore. But there's something about Trollers Gill and its nearby mine workings, caves and potholes that has sparked the imaginations of locals over the centuries.
Trollers Gill was said to be home to trolls – angry trolls, to be precise. Trolls who would throw rocks at people passing through the ravine. Trolls who, in some stories, lived alongside gnomes, sprites, goblins and pixies.
But these troublesome trolls pale in comparison next to the
Barguest – a ghost dog with "eyes as big as saucers" that could turn you to stone with a single glance.
Some believe the legend of the Barguest inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's
Hound of the Baskervilles. The evidence isn't watertight, but it's not hard to believe that this fearsome beast could haunt a writer's imagination.
Whether or not you believe in trolls and phantom hounds, there's something unquestionably atmospheric about Trollers Gill. Perhaps it's because it's a relatively untrodden part of the Dales in this day and age, meaning you often get the place to yourself.
Trollers Gill has inspired songs by
Corvid and
JD Roberts. It also inspired the British children's TV show
Roger and the Rottentrolls.
This show followed the adventures of Roger Beckett in Trollers Gill, "where the rocks are all slightly mad" and the trolls are terrified of the Barguest.
The afternoon tea
Every hike needs a reward. At Stump Cross Caverns, why not treat yourself to a
delicious and affordable afternoon tea?
Afternoon tea is as British as Buckingham Palace. Introduced in the 19th century by Anna Russell, Duchess of Bedford, it's inseparable in the imagination from stately homes, fine hotels and fancy tablecloths.
Here at Stump Cross Caverns, we serve afternoon tea in our cosy, quirky Time Cafe. It costs £25 a head and includes tea, cakes, scones, sandwiches and our famous sausage rolls – plus a calcite heart to take home and cherish. For £30, you get afternoon tea and a trip down the caves.
We're certain you'll enjoy our classic afternoon tea. Picture the scene: kicking back after a bracing walk in beautiful countryside, views of the Dales at your feet and a hearty afternoon tea in your belly.
The fun doesn't stop there, though. We offer a range of experiences, from
gem panning to
fossil hunting to the
UV Experience – a tour of the caves lit up by enchanting ultraviolet torches.
