Autumn and winter are great times to visit North Yorkshire. Discover some of the exciting events you can catch during the cooler months.

Summer might be over – but that doesn't mean the fun has come to an end.


Here in North Yorkshire, we're used to a bit of drizzle. And what's the best way to forget the wonky weather? Put on some exciting, family-friendly events, of course!


In fact, the cooler months are a great time to visit North Yorkshire. The winter chill somehow makes our landscape look even more beautiful. Plus, you can pick from a swathe of things to do without having to face the summer crowds.

October events


Apple day


  • Date: 1 October 2023 
  • Time: 11:00 to 17:00 
  • Location: Newby Hall and Gardens, Ripon, HG4 5AE


Want to try something a bit different this year?  Take part in Apple Day and its famous apple-throwing championship.


Yes, you read that right. It's a competition to see who can throw an apple the furthest distance over the River Ure. The winner gets a trophy.


There'll also be apple-pressing demonstrations, Cider tasting and advice on all things apple-related.


The Yorkshire Cheese Festival 


  • Date: 6 to 9 October 2023 
  • Location: Yoredale, Leyburn, DL8 3EL


This festival celebrates the incredible produce of the Yorkshire Dales – but cheese takes centre stage.


Local businesses from around North Yorkshire will hold their own special events throughout the days, including menus and tastings. A list of all these experiences can be found on the Yorkshire Dales National Park website. 


The Hull Fair


  • Date: 6 to 14 October 2023
  • Time: opening times vary – closes at 23:00
  • Location: Walton Street, Hull, HU3 6JU


The Hull Fair is one of the largest travelling fairs in Europe, with more than 250 rides and an array of attractions. It offers traditional favourites like the waltzers and dodgems, alongside newer and more exciting rides.


And the best part? Entry is free! 


Cavescape


  • Date: 7 October 2023
  • Time: 17:00
  • Location: Stump Cross Caverns, Pateley Bridge, HG3 5JL


Fancy a Friday night with a difference? On 7 October, experimental sound duo Cank will host an immersive live music experience in the depths of Stump Cross Caverns.


Dubbed Cavescape , the show promises an evocative sonic tapestry inspired by the magical underground world of Stump Cross. Participants will go on a self-guided tour of the caves, surrounded by the eerie echoes of synth, guitar and cello.

Ceilidh – Live Music and Wild Dancing


  • Date: 21 October 2023 
  • Time: 19:00 to 22:30 
  • Location: How Stean Gorge, Pately Bridge, HG3 5SX 


Take your partner by the hand and enjoy some wild dancing and live music from the Ceilidh band Blind Panic. Get ready to do-si-do and enjoy a steak and ale pie that's included in the ticket price. Bonus!


The Cavern of Lost Souls 


  • Date: 28 October 2023
  • Time: 45-minute slots between 17:30 and 20:30
  • Location: Stump Cross Caverns, Pateley Bridge, HG3 5JL 


Two hundred years ago, six miners were killed when a naked flame shook the core of Stump Cross Caverns, causing an explosion that brought boulders crashing and trapping every last soul to their fateful demise.


The only rescue attempt 100 years ago ended in disaster, when history repeated itself and the caves collapsed again.

The Stray Bonfire and Firework Display


  • Date: 5 November 
  • Time: 17:00 to 19:45 
  • Location: Oatlands Stray, Oatlands Drive, Harrogate, HG2 8JR


The Stray Bonfire and Firework Display promises a Bonfire Night to remember. This annual event ticks all the boxes, with a cosy, roaring fire and a spectacular light show.


But the perks don't stop there. You can also enjoy family entertainment such as face painting and stage acts. Food and drink will be available too.


Yorkshire's Winter Wonderland


  • Date: 17 November 2023 to 7 January 2024 
  • Location: York Designer Outlet, York, YO19 4TA 


Want to indulge in some Christmas magic? Winter Wonderland should be near the top of your list. It will host activities such as Northern England's largest ice rink, Santa's grotto and an Alpine-inspired cafe.


Winter Illuminations and Christmas Adventure 


  • Date: 18 November 2023 to 8 January 2024
  • Time: evenings
  • Location: Stockeld Park, Wetherby, LS22 4AN


When winter arrives, Stockeld Park turns into a spellbinding attraction that's full of festive cheer.


Take a stroll through the Enchanted Forest, filled with illuminated sculptures, dazzling pathways and shimmering lakes. Glide across the ice at the skating rink – or enjoy hot chocolate in the cosy cafe. It's the perfect place for the whole family to get together.


Harrogate Christmas Fayre


  • Date: 1 to 17 December 2023
  • Time: 10:00 to 16:30/19:00 
  • Location: Cambridge Street and Marketplace, Harrogate 


Experience the joy of Christmas in the heart of Yorkshire this December. Among the offerings will be crafts from artisan creators, mouth-watering treats to sample and festive decorations. 


There will also be music and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. 


Festive Family Disco


  • Date: 17 December 2023
  • Time: 12:00 to 16:00 
  • Location: DoubleTree by Hilton Hull, HU2 8NH


Get ready to celebrate Christmas with this family-friendly children's rave. Take your little ones and join a party they won't soon forget, with an afternoon full of singing, dancing and festive fun.
