Are you looking for some Valentine's Day inspiration? Explore 10 varied options in North Yorkshire.

For the world's romantics, 14 February is a day unlike any other. It's an opportunity to express love for a partner and enjoy a memorable experience together.
And best of all, there's no right or wrong way to do it. If you want to share a bowl of spaghetti in front of the telly, there's nothing stopping you.
Nevertheless, this special day provides a great opportunity for a special experience – from romantic rambles to candlelit cuisine, from theatre trips to craft workshops.
So, if you're looking for an outside-the-box experience in North Yorkshire this Valentine's Day, you've come to the right place. Here are 10 of the best.
1. Go for a sunrise hike
If you want to see North Yorkshire in all its glory, you can't beat a sunrise hike.
There are plenty of spots to choose from, ranging from the iconic to the off-the-beaten-track. But for our money, the best sunrise hike in the area is the 1,046-foot-high hill of Roseberry Topping.
Nicknamed "the Matterhorn of the North" after the famous Alp, Roseberry Topping offers panoramic views of the North York Moors – the perfect place to blow away the cobwebs.
2. Book a pottery class
Get hands-on and creative with a pottery class for two. There are plenty to choose from. But if you want to be taught by experienced potters in a gorgeous location, Bentham Pottery's courses could be just what you and your beau or belle need.

3. Go for afternoon tea

Afternoon tea is one of those traditions that's as English as cricket at Lord's or a royal wedding. Hotels, cafes and other establishments offer a wide range of afternoon teas from the lavish to the more affordable but no less delicious (like ours).
4. Visit a historical site
North Yorkshire is bursting with ruins, castles, abbeys and more. Why not take a romantic wander through Rievaulx Abbey, visit the stately gardens at Harewood House or explore the medieval fortress of Helmsley Castle?
These kinds of historical sites are a great way to soak up the scenery and stoke the imagination. Combined with a hearty lunch in one of North Yorkshire's traditional pubs or our Time Cafe, and you've got an unforgettable Valentine's Day in the making.
5. Have a spa day in Harrogate
Once voted the happiest town in England, Harrogate is certainly one of the most relaxed – not least because of its selection of spas. This includes the Turkish Baths in the Royal Baths building.
If you do go for a spa day in Harrogate this Valentine's Day, you'll be following in the footsteps (and bath robes) of countless tourists before you.
In the Victorian era, Harrogate was a go-to destination for rich folks looking for some country air and hydrotherapy. Today, you can sample the same, perhaps followed by a stroll through one of Harrogate's magnificent parks.
6. Book a cookery class

Are you looking for a hands-on experience this Valentine's Day? You can't go wrong with a cookery class. As well as rolling up your sleeves and learning new skills, you get some delicious grub at the end of the day.
The Grand York Cookery School in York offers a plethora of courses at a range of skill levels. This includes the Couple's Valentine's Cookery Class. For more information, take a look at the Grand York's course page.
7. Take in the views at Richmond Castle
Not far from the centre of Richmond and towering above the River Swale, the 12th-century keep at Richmond Castle offers panoramic views of the castle, the town and the Dales.
As well as the views from the keep, there are further vistas to be enjoyed in the peaceful Cockpit Garden. Polish the day off with a spot of lunch in Richmond, or take a trip to Stump Cross Caverns for our Valentine's afternoon tea.
For more information, see the English Heritage website.
8. Go stargazing
Did you know that the Yorkshire Dales is an International Dark Sky Reserve – one of only 25 such sites worldwide? This means our night skies are spectacularly dark – so dark that the stars shine more brightly here than elsewhere.
There are all sorts of places you can go to stargaze in North Yorkshire. But if you want a bit of guidance, why not check out the events at the Dark Skies Festival? These run from 13 February to 1 March and include several Valentine's Day events.
You can find more information on the festival website. Meanwhile, you can explore the cosmic calendar for inspiration over at the Royal Museums Greenwich website. Just make sure you wrap up warm!
And don't forget our Cosmic Adventures workshops. Join us at Stump Cross Caverns on selected dates throughout February (including Valentine's Day), and we'll take you on an educational trip through the stars. (No telescope necessary.)
9. Go birdwatching

One of the earliest references to Saint Valentine's Day as a day for lovers comes in Geoffrey Chaucer's medieval poem Parliament of Fowls. This long narrative poem includes a vision of a parliament where birds have to choose their mates.
Perhaps it's because February is the time when birds begin to mate that makes birdwatching such a suitably romantic activity for Valentine's Day. Possible destinations include Bempton Cliffs, Wheldrake Ings and the North York Moors.
10. Come to Stump Cross Caverns

Stump Cross Caverns welcomes visitors from around the world, all year round. But if you want a unique experience this Valentine's Day, why not pay us a visit?
Our Valentine's Day Afternoon Tea and Cave Experience is the perfect date idea for those wanting something a little different this 14 February.
